Ashlyns School, Berkhamsted

Tracing its roots back to the London Foundling hospital in 1740, the current Georgian-style buildings of Ashlyns School were opened in Berkhamsted in 1935. In 1951 Herts County Council took over the site and Ashlyns School was born.

In 2009, following a boiler breakdown, we were called to the school to provide a temporary heating solution. After a small amount of work modifying the pipework, we had the school’s heating system back up and working with minimal fuss using two units in parallel to provide 600 kWs. Over the next few days we returned regularly to monitor the heating system as the warmth of 1200 pupils was everyone’s main concern!

"In early 2009 our boilers failed completely. I asked for alternative heating and within two days we were back to normal. Apart from seeing WTG on their ‘house-keeping’ visits, it was as if they were not there. I would certainly recommend this company."
Denise Riches, Acting Premises Manager, Ashlyns School

All Saints Pastoral Centre, London Colney, Herts

Mobile details: Warm air heaters - 4 x 46 kw heaters delivering 1000 cubic metres of warm air per hour
Customer: Hollywell Building Services
Duration: Over two winters
Special features: Other types of heating. Innovative thinking. Long term arrangement.

This church had an out-dated and underperforming underfloor warm air heating system that was awaiting renovation but planning permission had not yet been agreed. We went to site and advised that we could heat the church up to an acceptable temperature by adding additional warm air into the existing system. We used propane fuelled warm air heaters specifically acquired for this project, subsequently adding in two further strategically placed heaters as their requirements increased, so the church was warm for meetings and the weekly services over two winters until the new system was installed.

Linton Village College, Linton, Cambs

Mobile details: Mobile 2 - 186 kW. Fuelled by oil
Customer: Linton Village College
Duration: 9 weeks
Special features: We turn out in adverse conditions!

OK, well not quite that bad, but even so...

We were called on a Thursday afternoon by the facilities manager at Linton Village College. Their heating was fuelled by oil, so with their agreement we took the Friday to change the burner on the mobile from gas to oil. We had promised to deliver for the Monday morning, however that Monday was the first of a very snowy week. Nevertheless the mobile was delivered on site by 8am that day. They were not expecting to see us in view of the weather and the college had been closed, but the heating was up and running on the same day so the college was warm for the students' return.

North Witchford Lodge, March, Cambs

Mobile details: Mobile 1 - 108 kW’s Natural Gas
Customer: Aylward EMS
Duration: 8 weeks
Special features: Urgency. Fitted into a tiny space. We can now provide 100kW with a footprint of 700mm x 400 mm.

We had a call late one afternoon from this retirement home because the boiler had failed. Our engineer was on site with a mobile boiler by 6am. The space available was very tight but, with the assistance of Aylwards engineers, and by removing the wheels and mudguards from the trailer, the mobile boiler was trolley-jacked into position. The old cast-iron sectional boilers had to be removed, but our engineer stayed all day to assist and the heating was on by the evening. Our engineer remained on site for several more hours to monitor progress, to ensure heating was re-established for the residents.

Robert Ellis House, Papworth Everard Hospital, Cambs

Mobile details: Mobile 2 in a more permanent ‘shed’, 186 kW’s fuelled by oil (bunded oil tank supplied)
Customer: Papworth Everard Trust
Duration: 3 years
Special features: Long term contract including maintenance .

This was a negotiated long-term contract for a hospital building which cared for patients with severe disabilities on a full time, long term basis. This building was in a heating ‘zone’ which included buildings that had already been emptied, the main boiler room was also being decommissioned. The future of Robert Ellis House was uncertain, but it needed constant and reliable heating for a period of 2 to 3 years. A more permanent structure was planned, so although the boilers were trailer mounted, a shed was built around the boilers for weather protection and a fence constructed for security and to make the boiler more unobtrusive. We provided a regular maintenance programme for the duration of the contract.
